The Knowledge of Sufism

Guard your heart from heedlessness, protect your lower self from carnal desires, save your intellect from ignorance, and you will be admitted into the company of the vigilant.

The Story of Jesus and the Self-Seeking People

One day, Jesus was walking in the desert with a group of self-seeking people. They begged him to tell them the secret name by which he restored the dead to living. Jesus said, "If I tell you, you will abuse its power." The people promised that they would use the knowledge wisely and they begged him again. "You do not know what you ask," he said. But he told them the word.

Soon after, the group was walking in a deserted place where they saw a heap of whitened bones. "Let us try out the word," they said to each other, and they did. The moment the word was pronounced, the bones become clothed with flesh and transformed into a wild beast which tore them to shreds.

Which means divine powers are not given to people who are unable to use them wisely.

Rabia Basri

Rabia Basri, a famous saint from Baghdad, said, "O' my Lord, if I worship you from fear of hell, burn me in hell. And if I worship you from hope of paradise, exclude me from paradise. But if I worship you for your own sake, do not withold from me your eternal beauty."

Advice and Knowledge From His Holiness Younus AlGohar

Wish for others whatever you wish for yourself.

Belief is the knowledge of the heart, the words of the tongue and the actions of the body.

These four qualities are enough possessions for a wise person: one who can control himself when in anger, in passion, in fear and in attraction is safe from the hands of the devil and from the fires of hell.

Have pity upon three groups of people:

  • A dear person who has lost his loved ones
  • A rich person who has lost his wealth
  • A learned one who is trapped among the ignorant

Have mercy on people, so you may receive mercy. Forgive people, so you may be forgiven. Avoid three qualities: jealousy, greed, and arrogance. Be pious in your inner self and outer life. If you have behaved badly, then do a good deed right away. Do not ask anything from anyone. Do not borrow anything from anyone, and do not make yourself a judge between two people.

The first stage of worship is silence. Silence is worship! Do not talk if you do not have to talk. Do not commit yourself to lengthy discussions of religion. Such talk only succeeds in making religion a complex and a confused matter. God has made religion easy and simple.

If you want to live more freely, meet nobody and know nobody.

Avoid greed, for greed in itself is poverty.

The most ignorant among you is one who does not learn from the changes in the world.

There is an organ in the body. If it is righteous it shows that the whole system will be righteous, and if it is corrupt the whole body will become corrupt. This organ is the heart!

The strongest among you is one who controls his anger.

Jealousy destroys good acts, just as fire burns wood. Charity consumes sin the same way water quenches fire. Protect and honour the earth for the earth is like your mother. The cure for ignorance is to ask and learn.

Avoid noise, excessive talking, too many questions, too many answers, and wasting your wealth. Avoid stubborness, for it begins in ignorance and ends in regret.

Be kind to people whether they deserve your kindness or not. If your kindness reaches the deserving, good for you. If your kindness reaches the undeserved, take joy in your compassion.

God, His Love and God's Lovers

God will not show mercy to him who doesn't show mercy to others. The believer is the mirror to the believer. Happy are those whose own faults preoccupy them too much to think of the faults of others. The person who repents is like one who has never sinned.

True wealth is not abundance in property but a generous heart!

Surely, God does not judge you by appearance or property, but by your heart and intentions therein. God is beautiful and loves beauty. There are as many ways to God as there are created souls. For none of you will faith be rectified unless your heart made be right. Whenever God loves a devotee, he subjects him to ordeals. Should he endure patiently, God singles him out. Should he be content, God purifies him.

Roumi said, "If in thirst, you drink water from a cup, you see God in it. Those who are not in love with God, will see only their own faces in it." Mevlana Roumi said, "Lovers converse with people only as much as they need to, otherwise they don't speak with people. For the most part they prefere to be alone and by themselves, for they yearn for intimate communion with the beloved. They are constantly in mediation. They do not understand conversation about anything besides their beloved. When they encounter misfortune, they do not grumble. Divine love has possessed them and they have plunged into the fire of love. They hear no words but the word of God. They never cease from the remembrance of God. Their aim is God alone and their desire is God's good pleasure." I hold you in my heart, I rock and sing you to sleep, you are everywhere in everyone.

Your heart is a polished mirror. You must wipe it clean of the veil of dust that has gathered upon it, because it is destined to reflect the light of divine secrets. There is a polish for everything that takes away rust, and the polish of the heart is the invocation of God. The heart of the believer is the sanctuary of God and nothing but God is allowed access there. The heart is the treasury in which God's mysteries are stored. Prophet Mohammad said, "Remembering God is the cure for the heart." It is a principle of beauty that a fair face cannot bear to remain hidden behind the curtain. It is incapable of modesty and if you close the door on it, it will only appear at the window. As you know, when a rare and wonderful idea arrives in your mind, you become obsessed with it and want to express it.

There are three agents that destroy religion:

  • An ill-tempered scholar
  • A tyrant leader
  • An ignorant theologian

There is no salvation for the soul but to fall in love. It has to creep and crawl among the lovers first. Only lovers can escape from these two worlds. This was written in creation. Only from the heart can one reach the sky. "The rose of glory can only be raised in the heart," said Roumi. Love is to see what is good and beautiful in everything.
